Gold and drawings

At first glance, Stefania Dei Rossi’s drawings seem to feature different protagonists from one another: in some cases, you might find a proud rooster; in others, a female figure portrayed from behind, and so on…

However, upon careful analysis of each work, you realize that the true protagonist is the pedestal, which highlights the depicted subject.

This pedestal is the common thread that binds the artist’s works and elevates the depicted subjects, allowing the observer to perceive them in a new and unexpected light.

The figures depicted, although in some way solidified, do not lose their vitality. It’s clear to the observer that these are alive and far from being a still life or the representation of a statue.

Thanks to the use of the pedestal, a dialogue is established between the object and the subject; the figures resting on it are amplified and imbued with deeper meaning, addressing various themes.

Another distinctive feature of these works is the technique with which they are created.

All drawings are executed in graphite and gold leaf on paper. The pairing of gold with the gray of the pencil creates a strong contrast, not just in terms of color.

The pencil, simple, essential, and, if we may say, “modest” in its own right, is paired with gold, the quintessential precious material, creating a unique and recognizable style, also influenced by the world of restoration.

Through her work, SDR seeks to preserve the artisanal dimension, reclaiming a love for craftsmanship. This is evident in the choice of techniques, tools, and materials – foremost among them the gold leaf produced by the last remaining artisanal gold beater active in Europe.

The manual process is thus retained even in the collections of furnishing accessories, demonstrating a fondness for the workshop dimension and the atelier in which she grew up.

Indeed, while SDR’s production goes beyond original drawings, they always remain present, representing the starting point for all collections of objects.

In these collections, the drawings are reproduced on different mediums to create furnishing items lost in time, capable of enriching living spaces with windows opened onto a dreamlike world.
