The Opening of Oro & Disegni

L’inaugurazione di Oro & Disegni
It has been a few weeks since the opening and subsequent inauguration of Oro & Disegni, my workshop/atelier in Venice, located in Campo Santa Maria Nova.

It was therefore my duty to provide an update and conclude the chapter related to the opening.

In this article, you will find various newspaper articles that reported the news along with a recap of how the inauguration event went (accompanied by a short video).

But let’s proceed in order…

Artisanal craftmanship replaces trinkets

Stefania Dei Rossi has opened a shop at Santa Maria Nova with unique gold leaf products

In the face of numerous artisanal activities that have closed their doors, there are those who courageously use their skills to enhance local craftsmanship. This is the philosophy of Stefania Dei Rossi, an artisan artist from Trieste, who in Campo Santa Maria Nova has countered the tide of trinkets by leveraging her skills in drawing and restoration. Her connection with the city began with her education at the Academy of Fine Arts, further strengthened by her partnership with her Venetian husband.

A few days ago, “Oro e Disegni” opened in Cannaregio, a sort of showroom where the artist displays her creations, pieces that are signed, numbered, and made with simple yet noble materials such as gold leaf: “A special leaf, produced here in Venice by Berta Battiloro, the last workshop in Europe where gold leaf is hand-beaten. This too is a value that I wanted to add to my creations, a dialogue that continues between Venetian artisans and ancient crafts, which then harmonize with the creative act of the object,” explains Dei Rossi.

Dei Rossi chose Cannaregio for her entrepreneurial journey: “Also thanks to my husband, a true Venetian, after several exhibitions of my work, I decided to make the leap, move to Venice and open my own atelier in the historic center. Despite the unexpected challenges, the many hurdles and difficulties in finding a suitable place, finally in Cannaregio I found the right space for my workshop.” Here, the entrepreneur decided to create a niche operation combining passion (for drawing) with expertise (in restoration), producing artifacts that become home decor items.

The start of this entrepreneurial journey was met with approval by Matteo Masat, director of Confcommercio: “The experience of this artisan, with the opening of her shop, represents the vibrant Venice we want. A Venice that must rediscover beauty even in the details, without selling out spaces and places to hit-and-run tourism, a process that is impoverishing it, especially of its history and identity as an active, creative, and ancient city capable of producing enchantment even with its unique and special artisan activities, as unique and special as Venice is.”

In Cannaregio, a new art workshop: Stefania Dei Rossi’s Gamble

With gold and craftsmanship, a new artistic atelier opened in Campo Santa Maria Nova has restored its ancient identity to one of the many Venetian workshops that had become yet another shop selling Chinese trinkets to hit-and-run tourists. This transformation, which has revived a small corner of the historic city, stems from a dual act of love for creativity and beauty, but especially for Venice.

It all boils down to two words “Oro e Disegni,” the name that the Triestine artist-craftswoman Stefania Dei Rossi has given to her new showroom in the Cannaregio district. In the shop, inaugurated a few days ago, Dei Rossi displays her very special and sparkling creations, all pieces signed, numbered, and made with simple yet very noble materials – such as gold leaf – which have earned her a place in the “Homo Faber Guide,” the guide that signals and gathers the most prestigious and creative artisans at a European level.

“My passion for the city stems from my visits to Venice during my studies at the Academy of Fine Arts, where I trained,” says Stefania, “Then, also thanks to my boyfriend and now husband, a true Venetian, after several exhibitions of my work, I decided to make the leap, move permanently to Venice and open my own atelier here, in the historic center. Despite the unexpected, the many hurdles and difficulties in finding a suitable place, finally in Cannaregio I found the right space for my workshop.”

An expert in restoration, Stefania has effectively created her own particular niche. “The experience of this talented craftswoman represents the vibrant Venice we want,” comments Matteo Masat, director of Confartigianato Venezia, “A Venice that needs to rediscover beauty even in the details, without selling spaces and places to the commodification of tourism.”

High craftsmanship atelier replaces a trinket shop in Venice

Recently opened by the Triestine artist-craftswoman Stefania Dei Rossi, married to a true Venetian. The showroom is located in Campo Santa Maria Nova

Thanks to gold and craftsmanship, a new artistic atelier in Campo Santa Maria Nova has restored its ancient identity to a Venetian workshop that until recently housed a shop selling Chinese trinkets for hit-and-run tourism. The entrepreneurial initiative is encapsulated in the words “Oro e Disegni,” the name that the Triestine artist-craftswoman Stefania Dei Rossi has given to her new showroom in Cannaregio.

In the shop, inaugurated a few days ago, Dei Rossi exhibits her very special and sparkling creations, all pieces strictly signed, numbered, and made with simple yet very noble materials like gold leaf, which have earned her a spot in the authoritative “Homo Faber Guide,” the guide that signals and gathers the most prestigious and creative artisans at a European level. “My passion for the city stems from my visits to Venice during my studies at the Academy of Fine Arts, where I trained,” shares Stefania, “Then, also thanks to my boyfriend and today husband, a true Venetian, after several exhibitions of my work, I decided to make the leap, move permanently to Venice and open my own atelier here, in the historic center.”

Despite the challenges and difficulties in finding a suitable place, Dei Rossi found just the right space for her workshop in the Cannaregio district. An expert in restoration, the artist has created her own particular niche: passionate about drawing, she focused especially on this passion, adding restoration techniques to create her artistic artifacts, which can be furniture elements, drawings, and graphics with a common peculiarity, the extensive use of gold leaf. Using also “a special leaf,” adds Dei Rossi, the one produced “here in Venice by Berta Battiloro, the last workshop in Europe where gold leaf is hand-beaten. This too is a value-added that I wanted to give to my creations, a dialogue that continues between Venetian artisans and ancient crafts, which mixed together then harmonize with the creative act of the object.”

“The experience of this talented craftswoman, with the opening of her stunning shop, represents the vibrant Venice we want,” comments Matteo Masat, director of Confartigianato Venezia, “A Venice that must rediscover beauty even in the details, without selling spaces and places to the commodification of tourism.”

How the Inauguration of Oro & Disegni Went

Even though the shop had been officially open for just over a week, the day of the inauguration was beautiful and very exciting for me.

I was finally able to show the previously unseen work I had done over the last year, present the two new placemat collections, two new paperweight collections, and a new series of drawings (the Suspended Serenissimi).

As always, it was wonderful to see and interact with people who have followed me from the beginning, with whom I now share mutual affection and esteem.

But it was equally wonderful to meet and present my work for the first time to “strangers” who showed sincere appreciation for my work.

As I like to say, “I’ve gained 20 kg from all the compliments received!”

The day passed swiftly; in addition to the invitees and their friends and relatives, there was a large influx of tourists, who flocked to Venice even more numerous than usual – partly due to the good weather, partly due to the April 25th bank holidays – and they “invaded” the shop with a constant coming and going from 11:30 am until 9:30 pm.

Not to mention the refreshments offered, which, thanks to that magical trait d’union that a good glass of Prosecco can create, inspired conversations about art, Venice, life… and I’ll better stop here! 😆

With over 200 attendees throughout the day and people who traveled hundreds of kilometers specifically for the inauguration (we even had guests and dear friends come from as far away as Vienna!), I can absolutely consider the event a success!

For Those Who Joined the Celebrations
